Nonprofit Laptops: A Dream Not Yet Over

LONDON — If you’d been told three years ago that someone was developing an educational laptop for the world’s poorest countries to buy for less than $200 each and that, by now, some one million children in 31 countries would be using them, what would you have thought?

fuseproject

Children used One Laptop Per Child's XO1 laptops in Mongolia.

Wow — that’s what I’d have thought. Wow again when I was told that up to one million more of those laptops were on order. The problem for One Laptop Per Child, the American nonprofit organization that has achieved all of the above, is that when its founder, the technologist Nicholas Negroponte, spelled out its objectives at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos in 2006, he promised to sell the laptop for $100 and to ship seven million of them.

Does he regret having promised so much? “When I started, I had to be knowingly hyperbolic, otherwise we could not have changed corporate strategy or swung governments into action,” said Mr. Negroponte. “It attracted the kind of attention that made this happen. Had I just said that I would make two million laptops by 2010 for children, OLPC would have been just another start-up.”

Perhaps, but by inflating expectations he has (unwittingly) helped his critics to attack one of the most ambitious design projects of our time. The sad, silly truth is that most designers still devote most of their efforts to the wealthiest 10 percent of the global population, rather than the “other 90 percent” who lack basic products and services. Designing a cheap, efficient educational laptop as part of a flexible learning system for kids in poor countries is a bold attempt to address that. It is also very risky and (thanks to Mr. Negroponte’s flair for spin) so visible that, if OLPC fails, it will be even harder to mount similarly ambitious projects in future. “I’m personally in two minds about its success,” said Cameron Sinclair, a co-founder of the Architecture for Humanity volunteer network, which uses OLPC laptops in a Kenyan school, adding that “it has certainly inspired designers to think bigger and on a grander scale.”

Yet lots of people seem to want OLPC to flop. The development lobby has dismissed it both for being a vanity project (no prizes for guessing whose) and for trying to apply first world solutions to third world problems. Teachers have criticized its educational methodology. Environmentalists have warned of toxic dumps of unwanted laptops. Techies have said it wouldn’t work and raged when OLPC replaced its bespoke operating system with one of Microsoft’s. And the tech industry has moaned about losing potential sales in new markets.

OLPC has undoubtedly suffered from straddling such ferociously political sectors as tech, development and education — and from launching at a time when high profile projects suddenly came under scrutiny from blogging and tweeting. Only two months ago, a Web site run by the United Nations (one of OLPC’s earliest champions) posted a blog entitled “One Laptop Per Child — The Dream is Over.” The one thing that OLPC’s critics — and supporters — agree on is that the XO1 laptop’s small, light tablet format, designed by fuseproject in San Francisco, has inspired other companies to launch similar models and created a fast-growing new product category. If Apple launches its long-rumored tablet computer, that category could become much, much bigger. Impressive, but not one of OLPC’s lofty objectives.

Despite everything, Mr. Negroponte claims that the tide is turning. Late last month the Uruguayan government completed the process of distributing an XO1 to each of its 415,000 elementary school children as the first phase of the Plan Ceibal initiative to provide a laptop for every student and teacher in the country.

Until now, OLPC has only had the evidence of small, isolated projects to rebuff its critics. What happens in Uruguay should demonstrate — one way or another — whether it can achieve its objective of improving educational standards on a sustainable basis. It should also help to establish what sort of support structure is needed, in terms of training, learning resources and tech back-up, to help students and teachers make the most of their laptops. and this information from here

A Really Big Notebook to Replace the Desktop (It Almost Doesn’t Fit on Your Lap)

A number of notebooks on the market style themselves as desktop replacements, but the Sony Vaio AW series is being positioned to replace the home theater — sort of.

The new Vaio starts with a mammoth 18.4-inch widescreen display, pumped up with display technology to rival many flat-panel TVs. Its resolution is 1080p — one of the higher high-definition standards. It is also the resolution of Sony’s Blu-ray DVD technology, and a Blu-ray drive is included. (One could ask how much resolution one really needs at 18.4 inches, but why spoil the display arms race?)

Though the emphasis is on the display, the Vaio AW is also a high-end computer aimed at those who want to edit photos and videos in HD. It has a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, up to a terabyte of storage and 4GB of RAM memory.

The AW comes in three models ranging from $2,000 to $3,200. The Vaio AW can also be connected to your TV via an HDMI connection, which supports not only HD, but also 5.1 surround sound.

And at nearly nine pounds, it may spend more time tethered to something at home than out on the road. STEPHEN C. MILLER

Why Use Interactive Notebooks?

We all know that people learn in different ways. Some people learn better by watching others, some learn better by reading, and some learn by doing. No matter what way you learn you can use an interactive notebook.

Interactive notebooks are created by each person individually. They can be created in a number of different ways using a number of different techniques. You should create them based on your needs.

You can make an interactive notebook for information regarding maps, ads, history, timelines, and politics. When you create notebooks for these types of suggestions, you will learn so much. You design them in a way that will help you learn.

These pieces are perfect for projects, study guides, and reports. They can be created by children and adults. You are not limited to the subject matter or content either.

All you need to get started with your own interactive notebook is colored pencils, crayons, highlighters, pen or pencil, binder or notebook, paper, glue, scissors, and information on your subject.

If the information you gather is something you can cut apart, you will want to cut out the information that is important to what you are studying. If you can't cut them out, you will want to make copies of the information. Once you have these pieces cut out, you will need to glue them to the right side of your notebook or paper. On the left side you will take notes and add information that is important to what you read in the pieces you glued.

You will want to write these in your own words and use pictures and other information that will help you remember what you read. Use charts, diagrams, graphics, and drawings that will remind you of what you read as well.

If you are creating your interactive notebook for a report or project, you may want to do your writing on notebook paper first so you can write it the way you want and make any necessary changes. Once you have it worded the way you want, you are ready to put it to print in your notebook.

These notebooks are also great for classroom projects. You can create them and share with the class or you can use them as a report based on the information provided by the teacher. These are also a great guide to use as study material for semester finals or tests.

If you use these in a classroom setting you will want to use information provided by the teacher on the right and then the students can add their own information on the left. The teacher can provide handouts, notes, and pictures. Students can take their own notes based on the information discussed in class. The students can research even further to come up with more information that can be included in the notebook.

Sometimes it's hard to remember what you read, but using interactive notebooks will help you. You have the ability to create them in a way that makes sense to you and is in line with your learning style. They are fun to make and make learning easy.

What Netbook, Notebook, Mini-Laptop Or Desktop?

Introduction:
How do you make the best choice with your hard earned money when you need to buy a computer?

Brief Reasoning:
Low cost netbooks are the smallest, very light weight, easy to stow away and carry, has WIFI, networked, but is very limited and slows down when it comes to running most common large applications. Netbooks are great if all you need is a basic online connection for email and taking notes.

Some notebooks and mini-laptops are priced just above the netbook cost and a performance notebook may go 2 to 4x of a netbook cost and have larger displays, more computing power, memory, disk space, is larger to carry in a backpack, takes more power and battery life is typically a few hours. Notebooks are typically designed with a price point, to match performance with a range of moderate to good capability and may perform very well for most of today's user application needs. A good notebook can easily do most any computing that is needed with reasonably good performance and has the advantage of complete under-the-arm computer portability and fits on top of your lap or any flat surface top.

Desktop computers range from very small to large boxes that are designed to run off AC wall power and left in a fixed location at a personal workspace-desk or area in a cabinet as an application server. Desktop costs range as low as a netbook and typically are at a lower cost than a notebook with similar capability. For the best value, one can usually find a much higher performance computer, more CPU, RAM, disk space, powerful graphics, have fast responding applications, for games, video image processing, and video phones. Overall, the desktop computer is the best choice if portability is not required.

Conclusion:
A person buying a computer today wants to use their money carefully when investing in computer technology to get the most value and have a satisfying experience and a long time benefit.
It's clear that a performance desktop computer system is a much better choice than most laptops for fixed location applications. However if portability is mandatory and good performance is needed a more expensive notebook (laptop) is a best fit. If you need it all, high performance and portability, very light weight and small are mandatory and basic computing is fine then a buy both a netbook for the portability and a main fixed high performance desktop computer to get the best experience and benefits of fast application performance computing of from desktop and the ease of mobility with a netbook.

Netbook-Mini Laptop Reviews - Asus Vs Acer Vs Samsung

The netbook/mini laptop market is currently dominated by three brands; Asus, Acer and Samsung. Many of the netbooks from these three brands have almost identical specs yet some models have proven to be more popular than others. Here is a quick review of the devices from each of the brands.

Asus Eee PC: Asus netbooks are currently leading the market for many reasons. For one, it was the one of the first companies to come up with a range of affordable mini-laptops. Secondly, its devices currently have some of the best specs in the market. The Asus Eee PC 1000HE and the 1008HA are currently the only models in the market that uses the 1.66GHZ Intel Atom N280 processor. The 1000HE also currently have the best battery lifespan in the market, lasting up to 9.5 hours on one charge.

Acer Aspire One:With almost identical specs, Acer has manage to differentiate itself in terms of design and pricing. It is currently one of the cheapest netbook series in the market. In term of designs, I must say that it is a little better looking the Asus devices and it also comes in a variety of colors (black, white, blue, red and pink).

Samsung Netbooks:Samsung netbooks are not the cheapest in the market and neither are they the most powerful. Despite that, they are currently some of the most expensive netbooks in the market. Samsung has managed to carve a niche for itself by making some of the best-looking netbooks in the market. The glossy blue NC10 has been on the best-seller's list for a long time now, mainly for its good looks (in my opinion). Other models such as the NC110 and the NC120 also sport very streamlined and sleek good looks.

Stylish White Netbooks - Samsung N120-12GW 10.1 Inch Netbook Review

Personally, I think any personal tech gadgets are fashion accessory so it won't hurt to pick a stylish one that best matches your personality. White laptops and netbooks have the rage for the past couple of years, more than any other colors due to the fact that they look modern, clean and just pure chic.

The Samsung N120-12GW netbook is currently one of the most stylish white netbooks in the market. Unlike many other 10.1-inch netbook models, this is an all-white model. The keyboard, mouse track pad, palm rest, sides, front, back and rear of this netbook is all white in color. It is very slim, measuring at 10.7 x 7.4 x 1.2 inches and weighing just 2.8 pounds.

The Samsung N120-12GW netbook also comes in black, but it doesn't look nearly as good as white one. It has almost all the latest specs a netbook can have, like a 1.6Ghz processor, 1GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 3 USB Ports, Bluetooth and wi-fi capabilities. When it was first launched, this model was little more expensive than usual but now, it costs around $350 each. That's about the average price of netbooks.

One of the highlights of the Samsung N120-12GW netbook would have to be its amazing keyboard. Samsung has managed to design the keyboard to feel very much like a full sized keyboard. It was very comfortable to type on. This model also comes with 2.1 speakers that is a major selling point for this model. The two main speakers are located on the sides. The sub-woofer is located on the left edge of the netbook. All in all, the Samsung N120-12GW netbook scores very well whether it is in the looks department or performance. It will make one of the best buys if you are looking for a stylish white netbook.

Is Notebook A Better Choice Than Desktop?

If internet made the world a global village, then we might as well say that notebooks made it a global colony. With desktops, things were a click away from us; notebook shorted the distance. Now we can carry the global colony on our shoulder. High-end technology at your lap, perhaps, we need nothing to conquer the world of convergence.

The great advantage of notebooks is that it gives us a sense of portability and mobility. Looking critically, portability is the only feature, a notebook has over desktops then why do we choose to go for a notebook? Notebooks can let you carry your work conveniently and you do not have to worry about all the wires, hardware and space required to keep a desktop. Also it's a matter of choice between work and home. You may want to work from home, when your baby or wife is ill. A notebook comes in handy then.

A notebook has a different role to play for different people, but it gives an incredible sense of freedom. Gone are the days when people walked around with pen and paper. All you need to do today to make notes it to buy a notebook. You may want to quickly write a email to a radio station, which is making noise in the name of music. You may want to sit in your neighborhood coffee shop and write a book or letter. But if you want to carry your notebook everywhere you go, you have to consider the weight of the machine too. A notebook weighs between 5 to 10 pounds; an ultralight model is even lighter. Whereas, a desktop computer, with its standalone CPU, monitor, and keyboard, weighs in at about 70 pounds. A notebook takes much lesser space too and is very convenient.

Some of the most famous notebooks are Sony Vaio, Apple MacBook, Dell Latitude, Toshiba, HP. Also there are many affordable versions of notebooks marketed by companies like Fujitsu, Panasonic, IBM, Asus and etc.

Let's look at a scenario where at a school, students are quietly seated at their desks and working on a class assignment with no teachers to guide them. It's real, and is happening in many schools around us. Now, we don't have to mourn looking at our tiny ones carrying pounds of baggage in their backs. Notebook has it all, from their books to assignment copies.

When we look at the productive side of the picture, we would promptly realize that a notebook is always a wise choice for an employer too. It makes his or her employees to achieve more productivity at work. It saves critical office space. At any crucial moment, a notebook can help you to do the work, even when you are not physically present in the office. When the traffic is high, and your boss is waiting for presentation in a conference room, a notebook comes to the rescue. A desktop PC does not give all this freedom for a good worker.

A research says that employees with notebooks work more than those companies with desktop PCs. A notebook enables you to work from anywhere, while traveling, from a beauty parlor, or while waiting for someone at a shopping mall. And the only disadvantage a notebook has is its safety, unless you doubly assure it from theft. It's easy to pick and elope for anyone at a busy commercial place. So, ensure the safety of your costly gadget that makes you feel the world is at your feet and enjoy the power of technology.

What Kind Of Notebook Is Right For You?

Notebooks are not just notebooks, there are a couple of different ways to do it. We are talking about the computer kind of notebook and the old fashioned kind that is made out of paper. They both have some definite pros and cons. If you want to be organized and you want to get your thoughts down on paper then you need one of these two types to work with. They will make everything neat and orderly and easy to manage.

The computer notebook is a great buy. It is obviously a more expensive buy but one that can do so many different things. This kind of computer can be carried with you to work and home and anywhere else that you need to take it. They are compact and light and each year they get lighter and m ore powerful.

There was a time when notebook computer screens were not very good but these days they are fantastic. No longer do people who use them have to worry about getting headaches or eye strain. They are so much smoother to look at and there are not more of those strange computer waves to have to contend with! The screens are also very bright and the colors are fantastic and true to life.

On a computer notebook you will be bale to write whatever you need to write each day, whether it is for work or for pleasure. You will also be able to manage your calendar and your schedule with ease. Most computers come with programs that will help you to keep track of all aspects of your life from important business meetings to your kids soccer games. These programs are powerful and simple to use. Then of course you have the ability to go online. The internet is a great place for you to go shopping for anything from groceries to fancy clothes and accessories. You could find yourself saving hundreds of dollars each and every year by shopping online instead of offline.

As you can see the notebook as a computer is a great idea that everyone can benefit from, but what about the old fashioned kind of paper notebook? These are great too. They are not able to do quite so many things however. Of course a paper book will not have any programs that you can use and it will not have any ability to go on the internet.

A paper notebook can however help you to plan anything that you need to plan. They come with calendars and schedulers that can be just as efficient to use as any other kind.

A top benefit of using these kinds of notebooks is for writing. When you write longhand the ideas flow better and faster. Your imagination is going to flow so much better when you are writing by hand as compared to writing on a computer. There is something that the pen in hand does for the mind that cannot be accomplished with a computer notebook.

Notebook Or a Desktop Computer?

Most people understand what a computer is and does, but choosing between a notebook and desktop computer might not be the easiest thing. Below are a few things to consider when choosing between the two.

Expense: One of the biggest factors for any purchase is price. Notebook and desktop computers have different prices, even for those with comparable features. Since notebooks are smaller, they require more engineering that desktops to produce smaller components, which then raises their prices. Different brands have different prices, even though they might have similar features. It pays to do some research in the beginning so that you will know if you are paying more for features or a name.

Portability: Desktop computers are intended to be permanent, not to move around from place to place like a notebook. While it is not the hardest thing to move a desktop form one location to another, it certainly is not the easiest task either. Even though notebooks are intended to be portable, their ease of portability can vary. Notebooks with larger screens and longer battery lives tend to be bulkier and harder to move around. There are very small notebooks out there that have great portability, but you sacrifice performance features of some of the larger ones.

Screen Size: The size of the screen on our notebook or desktop computer should relate to your intended uses. Normally, larger screen size will increase the price of the computer. A desktop computer will normally come with a larger screen than a comparably priced notebook would. Desktops also have a larger variety of screen types and upgrades to choose from than do notebooks.

Ability to upgrade: Some people are interested in purchasing a more basic computer with the intention of upgrading it over time. If that is the case, a desktop would prove to be a more suitable choice. While you can upgrade a laptop, upgrading a desktop is a little easier.

Shipping Cost: If you intend to purchase your computer online, then you will probably face shipping or handling charges of some kind. While many depend on the cost of the computer, some will go by weight. Therefor it might be worth considering those costs when deciding between a desktop and notebook computer.

So to sum it up, there are several things to consider when you are choosing between a desktop and notebook. Your budget will have a large effect on what you will get. If you have a limited budget, then you might get more bang for your buck with a desktop. On the other side, if you have a more flexible budget then you will have more options between a notebook and desktop. Portability is pretty simple. Notebooks are portable, but desktops aren't. Desktops typically have larger screen sizes for a lower cost than do notebooks. Desktops typically allow for easier upgrades. If you are to have your computer shipped, then choosing a notebook could save you some money.

Mini Laptop Computers - Three Tips on Mini Notebook Laptops

When you are in the process of buying a small travel computer, I have a view tips in this short article.

Tip 1

The laptop size is important. As you are a CPA it is very useful to have a 17" inch screen. For normal email, MSN or Skype use, a small screen is more than enough. The power of the new mini laptops increased dramatically.

Tip 2

If you select a mini laptop you should review the comments of users. For instance the service of Acer is much better than from Asus. Acer has a far more friendly service department. For a little bit more money Apple with their Apple Care Program offers you the utmost reliability if it service related.

Tip 3

With the strict cargo regulation of airlines nowadays the little computer is very useful, because of its weight and size you can put it in your hand luggage.

With the quality of the screen and the speed of the processor you can easily see a movie on a continental flight.
With an extended battery you have up to six hours of computer use, so next to the video you can do also some work aboard the plane.

On the keyboard: For all the netbook computers it is too small. It is a matter of training your fingers to be familiar with the small keys and slightly different layout.

You make more errors regardless your typing capability. I advise you to use one of those small traveling mouses, as the mouse pad on the keyboard is a real hassle.

The best in class keyboard is the Apple Macbook Air.

There is a lot more to say about the new very popular small computers, but as often is said 'word of mouth' is the most important reference guide.

So I advise you to visit my website by clicking Read More if you want to know more about the New Mini Laptops?

You will find reviews on the following brands: Acer, Apple, ASUS, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba. There are also video reviews you can watch to find out more about a specific brand netbook.

A Buyer's Guide to Notebook Computers

Buying notebook computers can be a daunting task for many consumers, but one can avoid the pitfalls by following a few common sense rules and understanding what each component does and why it is important. The first step is to decide what the notebook computer will be used for as that will have a major influence on later decisions. Notebook computers used for simple tasks cost less money than those used for gaming and more advanced needs such as video editing and photo manipulation. Also decide how big the notebook computer should be at this stage.

Notebook computers come in a wide range of sizes, ranging from tiny netbooks that are under an inch thin to monstrous powerhouses with screens in excess of twenty inches when measure diagonally. The best rule of them here is to only look at notebook computers that one is comfortable taking on the road, but are not too small to be ineffective. After all, what good are notebook computers that have screens too small to read?

After selecting a general range of screen sizes, it is time to look at the pixels. A pixel is a tiny dot on the screen that can change colors, and grids of thousands of pixels work together to display what end users see on their screen. The more pixels in a given space will result in sharper image quality, but also in higher prices more often than not. Of course, notebook computers with gorgeous screens need a graphics chip to render all those lovely images, windows, DVDs, games, and so on.

Graphics chips come in two varieties: discrete and integrated. Discrete are generally far more powerful, and have their own dedicated pool of memory but may also draw some additional memory from the system RAM. Integrated graphics are generally less powerful, and always use system RAM for their tasks. A general rule is that games, video editing, and image manipulation software all tend to take advantage of discrete graphics, while everyone else is probably better off saving their hard earned money on other features that notebook computers have to offer.

One of those features is memory, often called RAM. Notebook computers, like desktop computer need lots of memory if they are going to be tasked with handling multiple and/or complicated programs. RAM is measured in gigabytes, and it is important to know that systems with more than 4 gigabytes of RAM need 64-bit operating systems to reach their full potential.

Don't forget to factor in the CPU. Low-end notebook computers may feature either single or dual core CPUs and may be either 32- or 64-bit. It makes little sense to buy a 32-bit CPU today as the 64-bit era is upon us. It is only a matter of time before 32-bit applications are a thing of the past.

Rounding things out are the storage and networking options. CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drives and burners can augment a spacious hard drive, but one gets what they pay for. Wired and wireless networking is fairly standard on most modern laptops, though there are varying speed grades available.

Shopping For a Pink Notebook Computer For Your Daughter?

Girls will be girls and they love their pink! If they can get it in pink, that is what they want and their computers are no different. When notebooks first came out, you pretty much had to go with black. As they became more and more popular, different colors were added and they quickly became a hit with the kids. It only made sense that a pink notebook computer would hit the market and that the young girls would flock to it.

Some parents may have a little concern that they kids will eventually lose interest in it, but that should not be the case. As they get older, they will probably eventually upgrade anyway. Also, if you are getting them a top of the line machine, there are plenty of companies out there that sell customized skins that they can cover the pink with if they eventually outgrow it.

You should actually take the opposite approach. If they have something that they like, they are probably much more apt to use it then something that disgusts them when they pick it up. What girl would not be proud to show off her new pink notebook computer?

More than likely, if you are getting a pink notebook computer, you are going to be buying it for a teenager ( a little bit more this later), but that is not always the case. It is actually important for them to get used to computers as it is obviously how things are done these days. If they have something that they love, they will use it more and get familiar with word processors and researching subjects on the internet. While she may think it is pretty, she is actually learning how to use this tool to be successful not only in school, but also getting some great training for a real job as just about every profession you can think of involves a compute r in some shape or form.

Now if you are concerned with the quality of the computer that you can get with pink, don't be. Just about every major manufacturer has one in some form or another. Pink notebook computers are actually one of the hottest items on the market right now so companies and making sure they are putting out a quality product.

The funny thing with pink laptops is that as they become more popular, you are actually seeing more and more adults latch onto them. They are not merely for the children as you would initially think. Some people like attention and they will definitely get that. Imagine being out in the park grabbing your lunch and all of a sudden you see some thirty something man flip one of these babies open! Tell me you are not going to take notice.

Whether you are shopping for a pink notebook computer for your daughter or for the little girl in you, you will have a great selection of computer to choose from. Going back only a year or so ago, you were stuck with a below average computer and were paying solely for the unique color. Now you are getting a world class machine that can stand on its own merit. You want something to catch everyone's attention, go get some pink!

Innovations of the Laptop Notebook Computer

5 Reasons Why Low Cost Netbook is the Best Lap Tops Notebook Computer For College Students

Back in the early nineties, I was in college. Miami Hurricanes was the best football team in the NCAA. Dan Marino was still the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. Windows just came out. Students rarely require extensive use of a computer. Except those in the engineering and computer courses, of course. We had programming assignments that require constant use of computers. While there were ample terminals over at the computer lab, it was not conducive for me since I live off campus. Don't really want to stay too late in the computer lab.

Thus, I bought myself a 286 machine. Shared the cost with another student friend. Yes, we both didn't have to stay cooped up in the college computer room to complete our computer assignments. We did it all at home. Many of the other computer students also bought their own computers to enable them to complete their assignments at home. Basically, back then, students rely on computers at home. Notebooks? Yeah, it's the paper kind which we write on with pens and pencils.

Fast forward to the present day. The year 2008 saw the emergence of a new breed of notebook computers. ASUS was the first to bring about the Eee PC. A notebook which is small in many ways - price, size, weight, and features. It was the first sub USD$500 notebook.

The other hardware vendors stayed away from the market. However, they kept a close look at it and paid attention to the market growth. Before you know it, many more hardware players joined in the bandwagon as the market for the sub USD$500 machines boomed tremendously. Today, we see the big players like HP and Lenovo making their presence felt in this fast growing market segment better know now netbook. Low cost netbooks have made its way into the main stream and making headlines.

A student's life these days require that they are equipped with a computer. Assignments are now basically done on computers. No more passing of a handwritten documents. Everything needs to be neatly done in a word processor, spreadsheet, or presentation.

Today, we see students carrying laptops and notebooks everywhere in their college campus. How many of them can really afford a full fledge notebook? I'd say many can't afford one. To those parents who've sacrificed to get a notebook for their children in college, I absolutely bow my head to you. I know it's a big sacrifice, especially in Malaysia, where I live. The minimum cost of a basic low end notebook is about MYR2500. That's a lot of money for most parents over here in Malaysia.

This brings me to the first and probably the most important reason why the low cost netbooks make for the best lap tops for college students.

1. Low Cost

A basic netbook, currently costs around USD$300. That translates to about MYR1300 in the Malaysian market. This means, parents and college students could save about MYR1000 if they get themselves one of these low cost netbooks instead of a regular notebook.

That's a huge savings. For parents who've got two children in college, they can basically get two netbooks for the same price of a single basic low end notebook. Thanks to these cheap netbooks, more students can now own a computer. If only they can somehow bring it even lower. How about below MYR1000? That would mean, a sub USD$200. I do think it's possible. Maybe in a couple of years or so.

2. Light Weight

I am very familiar to the burden of having to carry a notebook around day in and day out. Yes, I am a notebook backpacker, and proud of it too. Every once in a while, I would have to like do some spring cleaning of my notebook backpack. Yes, after a few weeks, it'd be filled with papers and notes which I don't really refer to nor do I actually have a need for them. They are just there in the backpack, piling up after so many days at work.

The backpack alone, with the required paddings and what nots weighs handsomely. Add a notebook (3kg), a group of CDs and DVDs (0.5kg), and the above mentioned load of paperwork, I'd say I'm carrying around a good 5kg to 6kg of weight on my shoulder every single day.

At first, you don't really notice the heaviness of that 5kg. After a while, your shoulders and your back starts to ache and you begin to wonder why. Only then do you realize that it's probably caused by the sheer weight of that extra 5kg which you have to carry around daily.

The netbooks of today weighs in at about 1.5kg. Some would probably weigh more depending on the battery it's installed with. Not a lot more, however. A netbook with a 6 cell battery weighs in at about slightly less than 2kg. Still way better than a standard notebook.

College students, especially the ladies, would certainly benefit from the netbooks being light weight. Being as light as they are currently, college students can surely carry them around as they commute around the college campus from one class to another. No worries of a shoulder or back pain as the netbooks are very light indeed.

3. Small Footprint

When sitting in a lecture hall, there really is not much space for a college student to use. The seats are normally equipped with a small flexible table. Setting up a standard 14inch or 15inch notebook on these small table tops would be a hassle. There will not be any room left for anything other than the notebook.

Here lies the beauty of a netbook. Netbooks are size at a mere 10inch, some even smaller. They just fit in nicely for a lecture hall environment. Set one up on that small flexible table, and you probably would have a tiny bit of space left to put anything small. A small Post It Notes perhaps? An MP3 recorder perhaps?

The sheer small size also means that the netbook need not be carried in a notebook backpack. Ladies can probably just dump the tiny unit into their handbags. Of course, it's not going to fit if they use those tiny little handbags that really can't fit anything but their facial makeover items.

A standard (is there such a thing) coach handbag will certainly fit a 10inch netbook nicely. No one would even suspect that there is computer in the handbag.

4. Communication Features

Almost all netbooks currently are configured with a handsome lot of communication features. It's got speakers, cameras, wifi, and bluetooth for a start. These components are already good enough to allow users to communicate with ease over the internet.

Social networking? Chatting space? Skype? Yahoo Messenger? Google Chat? FaceBook? MySpace? Video conferencing? Just name it. Even the most basic low cost netbook is more than capable of allowing its' users to utilize all the above mentioned communication channel. That is why a netbook, even the most basic ones are already more than capable to allow college students to communicate with their peers from wherever they are.

5. Style

Have you seen these low cost netbooks? Don't they look awesome? One thing is for sure, the manufacturers are really putting in their effort to make these tiny units look exceptionally good. The finishing they've put on these netbooks are simply pleasing to the eyes. A true eye candy, I might say so myself. They come in multiple choice of colors. You name it, they come in orange, blue, red, yellow, gray, black, green, and many more.

Now wouldn't you agree that the low cost netbook makes for the best lap tops notebook computer for college students? I certainly think so. Why not? Well, of course, its not going to be suitable for all college assignments. As long as the student understands the limitation of the Atom CPU, it would be just dandy. Surely they can't expect the small netbook to be capable of rendering 3D motion graphics for them. It would also not be suitable to compile really complex engineering calculations and large programming compilation jobs.

I'd say that netbooks will be the must have gadget for college students pretty soon, if not already. You wouldn't be cool without one.

The Writer's Skill Set - Working the Notebook

Every writer should invest in a notebook. The notebook is an idea catcher, a problem solver, a rant holder, a place to strategize, to develop, to record observations. It's a storage space, a bank and a vault. Think about where you store your ideas, where you solve writing problems, where you create. Is it in one focused place? Are your ideas organized or scattered? Do you have shoeboxes filled with napkins and envelopes?

If you're a beginning writer, looking for your first big idea, or trying to take your work in a new direction, the writer's notebook is a worthwhile endeavour.

While it is beneficial to write in your notebook everyday, it's important to make a distinction: the writer's notebook is not the same as a personal diary. Make a clear separation between professional writing and personal writing.

So if it's not a diary, and you're supposed to write every day, what do you write?

Everything in the writer's notebook should be work related. Even the rants! Keep your notebook as organized as possible with a section for ideas, a section for observations, a section for project specific questions, a section for writing exercises, a section for rants, and so on. Every day, write in each section. It doesn't have to be long or cover multiple pages, nor does it have to be your best writing. Expecting brilliance every time you create is the quickest path to writer's block. Simply work on a routine of regular writing in a consistent manner in a focused location.

It's important to keep in mind that this notebook does not have to keep to a traditional form. It can - it can be a small moleskine that you carry around to be whipped out at a moments notice when creativity strikes. But there are many writers who don't create with pen and paper. Don't reject this concept because it's outside your current creation method. It's easy to be flexible with the form of the notebook. It can be a file folder with pictures for inspiration. A blackberry where you store idea files. An envelope of newspaper clippings. An artist's pad. The form doesn't matter so long as it allows you to write in a consistent and regular manner.

Every writer needs a place to store the thoughts, the ideas, the observations, that occur daily. Every writer should have a single point of access, a well to draw from when something special is needed to move a project forward. Use the writer's notebook to inspire creativity, to prevent writer's block, to consistently improve your skills as a professional writer.

Reduced Prices For Laptops - Your Very Own Notebook Computer is Waiting

Now that reduced prices for laptop computers are becoming increasingly common, upgrading your desktop computer to a portable notebook computer is fully within reach. Just a couple years ago, the idea of getting a laptop computer for the reduced price of around five hundred dollars was just absurd. Today, though, prices well below one thousand dollars are extremely common for great laptop computers. Curling up on the couch with your next computer is now more than just a fantasy!

Sure, you can always spend multiple thousands of dollars on any computer, whether a laptop or desktop, and get the very latest technology, the biggest hard drive, and the absolute-widest screen, but many times you just don't need all of those fancy options. The middle-of-the-road options are usually more than sufficient for today's computer user. Reduced price laptops and notebooks all make it affordable to do common-computer tasks portably. Things like surfing the internet, writing, sending emails, playing games. Even watching movies.

The reduced prices of today's laptops were simply unheard of only until recently. Even if you last went into a computer store just six months ago, the recent drop in prices have made just about every system even more affordable. These days it can be hard to find a system that costs more than one thousand dollars. It is truly amazing how much the average price of a laptop computer has dropped. Reduced prices for notebook computers are now standard.

How much you can really save when buying a laptop computer depends on where you buy it. To get the most reduced price for a notebook computer, buying online through a major internet retailer is the best way to get the lowest price and also the largest selection. Because internet-only retailers like Amazon don't have to pay for the business overhead of having a brick-and-mortar location, they can pass on those savings to their customers through price. That is one of the reasons that shopping through the internet has become so popular over the last decade. Naturally, it is extremely convenient, too. Are you ready to get a great laptop computer? Put your feet up, and click here to start looking for the perfect Reduced Price Laptop.

Apple MacBook MB466LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop - The Most Overrated Notebook?

It is well known that Apple computers cost way more than regular PCs and laptops. The question is, is it worth the price? The Apple MacBook MB466LL/A 13.3-Inch laptop is currently its most popular model. It cost 2 - 3 times more than other notebooks with similar specs. Here is a quick look at whether this notebook warrants its hefty price tag, or whether it is all fluff and hype.

Lets start by examining its specification. It runs on a 2GHz Intel core 2 duo processor. It comes with 2 GB of RAM and a 160 GB hard drive. Currently, this model cost a little over $1200. Lets compare this model to one of the most popular netbook models, the Asus Eee 1000HE. The Asus netbook runs on a 1.66Ghz processor, 1 GB of RAM (upgradeable to 2GB) and a 160GB hard drive (with an extra 10GB of online storage). As you can see, the Apple MacBook MB466LL/A 13.3-Inch laptop is just a wee bit more powerful than the Asus Eee. The Asus 1000HE currently cost a little below $400. Is it worthwhile paying three time the price for the Apple model?

Another popular 13" laptop model in the market currently is the Toshiba Satellite A405-S2915. This laptop runs on a 2 GHz Intel processor, has 4GB of RAM (upgradeable to 8GB) and a 320GB hard-drive. This more powerful laptop costs just a little over $800, which is much cheaper than the MacBook.

So as we can see, the hefty price tag of the Apple MacBook MB466LL/A 13.3-Inch laptop is not reflected in its specifications. Is there anything else that warrants the hefty premium? Apple computers do have their own distinctions. For starters, they run on the Leopard operating system, which many claims (purportedly) to be user-friendlier than Window's operating systems. Then there is of course the fancy mouse pad with multi touch recognition. Many say that Apple's sleek design is simply irresistible. The MacBook's display is a back-lit LED screen, which is quite rare among regular laptops.

There is virtually nothing that can be done on a MacBook that can't be done on a regular laptop. In fact, there are way much more software out there that are specifically written for Window's operating system compared to Mac softwares.

To sum up, the extra $400 that you will be paying for the MacBook would be mainly for the laptop's design, fancy mouse pad and Apple's operating system. In short, the novelty factor. If these aren't good enough reasons for you to fork out the extra $400, there is really very little reason for you buy the MacBook.

How to Get Your Hands on a Cheap Gaming Laptop!

Have you noticed that Gaming Laptops are so expensive and you are likely to pay any between $3000 - $6000 for some of the top models. However, in order to produce an exclusive gaming laptop, it requires certain high-end components and specifications. Think about Blu-ray, mega fast processor speeds, superior graphics and a ton of RAM.

This is all well and good, but what happens when the gaming laptop of your dreams, looks like it's just going to remain a dream.

It appears there are a number of ways you can still get your hands on a decent and reliable gaming laptop. OK, in all honesty, it may not have everything that you would get for a higher priced model, but it will still provide you with great performance and allow you to enjoy the latest and up to the minute 3D video games on your laptop.

So where do you start looking?

If you are in the market to purchase a new laptop for your gaming pleasure, there are two that you may wish to consider - The Gateway P-7811FX and the Qosmio X305. Both of these can be purchased for approximately $1500, so a huge saving on what you first considered.

However, if this is still way over your budget, then you still have the choice of a refurbished or used laptop.

A refurbished laptop has usually been returned to the manufacturer because of a slight blemish or scratch. The manufacturer will then put this through quality testing and if it is believed to be acceptable for sale to the general public, it will then be available to you at a much lower price. Usually you will also receive a guarantee and a warranty.

As for used laptops, two of the best ways to get your hands on one is through an auction or even checking out the classified ads of your local newspaper. I would advise a slightly more cautious approach if you are looking to purchase a used laptop. You don't wish to agree a sale and then find you have bought something of no use. This is why I suggest your Local newspaper, this can give you the opportunity to visit the seller and check out your gaming laptop first hand.

As i have mentioned, these are merely a couple of ways to get your hands on an affordable laptop. Please check out my article on other ways to purchase Bargain Laptops. I also want to tell you about another area of interest that i will be writing about soon, Right-Hand Drive Jeeps.

Netbooks Versus Laptops - What You Need to Know Before You Buy - Pros and Cons

Are the days of the Laptop numbered?

As the world becomes a smaller place, the Internet grows ever larger and more resourceful. Today, we cannot survive without the Internet at our disposal for a very long time. Hence, vast arrays of hand held solutions which promise Internet access are available. While all of them have their uses, Internet on hand held devices is hardly as rich and resourceful as that on a full-fledged PC. Mobile browsers come with limited support, especially for features like embedded video and animation, thus leaving your web experience half-baked. In today's age of extensive mobility, even the much vaulted laptop looks like a lumbering giant. The solution? Enter the Netbook world.

As of today, Netbooks are little more than ultra portable laptops. As the name suggests, it is best suited for surfing the net on the go along with other lightweight allied tasks. It is not fundamentally designed to be a multimedia center or an office workstation and most Netbooks reflect that.

Screen size for Netbooks is generally 8-9 inches. Screen resolution varies according to make and model and is available up to a respectable 1024x600. While the smaller form factor has definite portability advantages, the smaller keyboard and touchpad area can be a real pain for people with large hands. Connectivity in Netbooks is paramount and hence it generally comes with a whole array of USB connectors, an Ethernet connection and the latest available wireless technology. External display devices maybe supported through DVI/S-Video. Optical drives are optionally available.

Under the hood, the processor for Netbooks needs to be a frugal drinker of electricity. As of today, three different platforms are available. The reliable but ageing VIA C7D (HP 2133 miniNote), the popular Intel Atom processor, and the mixed-bag options offered by AMD (Sempron 2100+, Turion64 or the puny Geode LX800). Memory typically comes in the 512MB-2GB range. Storage may be in the form of a SSD (solid state drive) or a simple hard drive. While SSD's are faster, compact and consume less power, they also add a lot to the price tag of Netbooks. As a compromise, some vendors ship their units with a limited capacity (2-4 GB) flash memory which usually contains the operating system, and a standard hard drive for storage.

In terms of software, you can go for Windows XP or Linux. Linux distributions like Ubuntu 8.10 are an excellent choice as they work very well out of the box. Windows Vista performance is generally poor as they require more power.

A checklist while getting Netbooks can be as follows:-

• Power efficiency- The Atom offers the best bet, but the 945 chipset it ships with is old. The newer US15 chipset is expected to be out soon. Keep a lookout

• Memory- 512MB maybe adequate but you are better off with 1GB+

• Video - Look out for the upcoming Ion(Atom+ GeForce 9400) platform for NVidia with HD Playback capabilities

• Hard Drive -SSD's offer performance and efficiency at higher prices

• Price- can be bought within $500 in general

Most major brands like Dell, HP, Compaq and Acer have Netbooks in their lineup. The ASUS Eee Pc, the first one launched, is also a decent choice. What you have to decide is whether you actually need a Netbook. While it offers portability, a rich web experience and lightweight computing capabilities, it is not really a replacement for a laptop or a phone and in general have failed to find a market niche till date.

If you spend somewhere between four hundred and one thousand dollars, you can get a great laptop.

Like a lot of people, you may have been waiting for the right time to get your first laptop. Maybe you are buying your first computer and reading this article on a friend's PC or on a library computer. Whatever your reason for needing a bargain laptop, now is a great time to invest in that system. Use it every day for the next year and it can cost as little as one dollar per day. That's less than a cup of coffee!

The idea of a bargain laptop was unheard of just a few years ago. Back then, most laptops were still expensive and heavy. To get a slick little bargain laptop comparable to today's models, you would have had to go to the top of the price range and shelled out quite a bit of money. Whichever laptop or notebook computer you are looking to get, shopping for one online through a major internet retailer is the best approach when you are looking for the lowest prices, the best selection, and convenience. How to Write a Killer iPhone App

By Panah C Rad Platinum Quality Author

iPhone application development is one of the hottest fields in the world of information technology these days. Many programmers have found instant fame and fortune by writing killer iPhone applications. It's true that these apps are fairly cheap, but if you write one that goes viral, you can make a lot of money. But here is the challenge. How do your write a viral program for mobile phones? Not every app is going to make it, and you could end up spending hours working on an app that ends up producing no real results. Here are a few factors that have helped web-apps go viral on iTunes:

* Simplicity: you want a program that is easy to use. You don't want your users to have to be rocket scientists to play with your product. The more difficult you make your program, the less success your are going to have.
* Usefulness: this really applies to business and utility web-apps. You need to solve a problem and address a need. You can't just introduce a product for the sake of doing it.
* Innovation: sometimes the simplest ideas take off because nobody has thought of them before. Take iFart for example. It's very simple but has made its developers a lot of money.
* Price: your product can be priced from $0.99 to $20. Sometimes, you get more value by giving it all for free. In fact, a lot of companies have gained a lot of exposure by giving away freebies. Make sure you don't price it too high or you are going to turn people off.
* Support: be responsive. Provide them with support, and you'll reap the rewards.
* Updates: your job is not done once you have finished coding. You should listen to your customers and provide them with features that they need.

Writing code may not be difficult for you, but getting your app to go viral is not as easy as it sounds. Keep things simple and provide value, and you are on your way.

Apple leaks 17-inch iMac for $899

It's kind of funny when an Italian-language site breaks a wee bit of English-language-based Apple news, but that's what happened when SetteB.IT spotted a small mention of an $899 17-inch iMac for the education market on Apple's own Web site.

Currently, Apple is offering iMacs only in 20- and 24-inch screen sizes. The 20-inch model starts at $1,199, and the 24-incher starts at $1,499.

No word on when the "new" 17-incher will arrive (or if it's really new), but we'll await official confirmation from Apple.

Anybody interested? In this economy, I think the sub-$1,000 market is a good spot for Apple to play in--especially when it comes to cash-strapped parents of students.
