It is hard to explain just how much a one inch thick Moleskin Notebook Diary has changed by life. When I look back at the first entry I ever wrote (On February 9th) it is not difficult to see that I have changed so much in the five months that have passed.

Before I bought my dairy I had become a very goal orientated person, I would set myself new goals all the time and in a way that was the problem. I was so caught up in setting myself goals, coming up with idealized ways to make myself better, to achieve more that I didn't really ever follow through will my grand ideas.

I believe it was Tim Ferris author of the life changing Four Hour Work Week, that led me to buy a notebook, he calls himself a meticulous note taker, In the beginning I was the kind of note taker who upon looking back at his scribbled notes had no idea what they where referencing. Just an assortment of single words and phrases, which I'm sure my mind and pen thought would trigger vivid memories and ideas, but instead triggered shrugs of confusion.

But I quickly came to find a structure that suited me that helped me achieve my goals and set new ones. It is a structure that has changed over time, like everything in life you can take all the advice you want but in the end you will find in the mist of all that advice your own path, stay with it.

Each day I open my diary to todays page and write my first heading, It is one of my 3 goals that I want to achieve, usually these goals take a month or two to complete so may have written this heading 30 or 40 times by now. But each day I write in what I can do that day to get a step closer to achieving that goal. Its the baby steps we all need to take the same actions that give us validation and keep us going. Break a daunting goal down into tiny sections and you'll find that they aren't daunting at all.

So my heading gets three lines under it with my tasks for the day. I set three because if can only achieve one of them i've still had a good day, I can move the other two to the next day, but if I achieve all three I've had a fantastic day.

I do another heading for my next goal and repeat the actions, my third goals is a fitness goal, with goals like this I find it is good to draw a little time line of the week, things like fitness goals gain so much if you can see where you are progressing, when you're putting in a good amount of effort and especially when you letting it slack. So I draw the week out, I can see what i did on Monday and push myself further on Tuesday. Again you find your own way this helps to motivate me.

OK, so you've seen the new mini notebook PC and now you want one. How do you plan on using it? Well, lets look at it first. Right off the bat you have like the price tag. Around the holidays probably the cheapest one I saw was around $300 maybe $350 and while that is substantially less than a full size notebook PC, here we are a month and a half later and prices are falling by at least $100 maybe more. Another thing you might like about it is the small footprint. It may not fit in your pocket but the mini notebook PC is considerably more portable than the full size notebook PC. Score one for price. Score one for size. It has is all, right?

Well, lets look closer. You know that small size? The small size means a smaller cramped keyboard and a smaller screen to go with the smaller keyboard. There is no CD-ROM (unless you want to pay extra), no hard drive (they have a solid state memory), and maybe a different operating system than what you're used to using. Do you still think it sounds like a good idea? Do you still want one? Maybe you do. If you're just interested in doing a little web surfing at the local coffee shop or at the airport then just maybe. However, if you need it to do some hard core business applications you might not want one. In fact, depending on your needs, you may not even need a computer at all if all you're after is Internet access.

There are smaller cheaper alternatives for web surfing if that is your primary use. Some media players have WIFI capabilities and today's smart cell phones or smart phones can perform many of the tasks that were once reserved for its big brothers. Back in the second sentence I asked how you plan on using it. While the mini notebook PC (or net book) looks like a fun toy, it may only be a toy if it doesn't suit your needs.

The notebook market is a billion dollar business and every brand wants a share of that pie. The manufacturers get more customers by either producing a better, faster, lighter version of the same laptop their competitor makes, or try to diversify a little. The more types of notebooks there are the better for us, customers, because we get to choose a device that fits our needs more.

Most people don't know what they really need from a notebook, usually they know they want a portable computer with that stuff that opens and shows other stuff and then they want it to connect to that wireless stuff, you know, but that's barely enough to go out and buy one. Almost every laptop computer has wireless connectivity, I haven't seen one in years that hadn't and they all have a decent color TFT screen. Most wannabe customers haven't even heard of different kinds of notebooks, and they think they are all 15" and about 6 pounds heavy. They don't know about netbooks or subnotebooks and they've never seen a tablet PC in their life. That's why I thought it would be a good idea to cover a few different kinds of the portable computer world and give a few extra options before choosing.

First of all the customer has to make up their mind about the budget. There are cheap laptops and expensive laptops, but that has nothing to do with their actual price. A gamer notebook may be a really good deal for $800 but a netbook for that kind of money is amazingly overpriced. For example if you have $400 to buy a new notebook and you are absolutely against used and refurbished computers, your best bet will be a good netbook. There are lots of them for that money, you just have to pick one. For the same price there may be a normal budget notebook, but I wouldn't keep my hopes high on finding one with proper components.

Are you going to play some recent games on your new notebook, or is it only to keep in touch with the net, read blogs and update status on facebook? Are you going to carry it around often and away from places where you can charge it? These are important things to decide on.

Starting with the cheapest type of new notebooks one can get, the netbooks or mini notebook computers. These are usually 10" to 12" small laptops with internal components that were designed for mobile use. Don't expect very much of a netbook and you won't be disappointed, but they aren't useless at all. The default setup is 1.6Ghz Intel Atom processor paired with a gigabyte memory, 160GB to 250GB hard disk drive and an integrated video card to let you know what's going on. There are more powerful models than this basic setup.

Nvidia ION is a platform made for thin desktop clients, but it's just as awesome when put into such a small shell. ION can play HD videos even in blu-ray quality without breaking a sweat. The usual ION based netbook has a 12" 1368x768 screen to fully support 720p HD playback. These notebooks run out of steam faster than the ones with integrated video, but that's up to personal preference. I personally like my normal netbook with its 6.5 hours of productivity on battery. Netbooks are really cheap to get, $329 to $500, if you have that kind of money and don't expect it to be your only and main laptop, go on and get one, you won't be disappointed I promise.

15.6 inches. I suspect that 80% of all notebooks produced falls into this category. This is the budget bunch, probably this is why everyone has or wants to buy one of these. They're cheap yet properly equipped with enough power. Default parts include dual core processor, 2GB memory and a spacious 320GB to 500GB hard disk drive. These notebooks are almost always equipped with a DVD-RW drive and all kinds of smart card readers. They're the draft horses of portable computing. Nothing is perfect though and that's the case with these notebooks as well. Value notebooks are often low on battery life, 1 hour 50 minutes to 2.5 hours between charges is normal for a cheap model, more expensive ones can run up to 4-5 hours on a charge. They're usually too heavy to comfortably carry around with their 5-7 pounds of weight. $500 to $800 gets you one of these.

Subnotebooks are the toys of the business world. These are small and portable versions of the breed described above. With normal notebook parts like dual core processors and discrete video chips stuffed into a small 13" case they're really expensive for members of the public. A businessman with the need for power and portability at the same time should buy one of these for $1500-$2500, while the average customer will be just fine with a netbook instead.

Gamer notebooks are the titans. 17" screens and the latest and best processors available really make the price go up fast, and putting everything into a 17" case doesn't help make it easy and thin either. Hardcore gamers who need to be on every LAN party have probably always wanted a notebook that can be brought on foot instead of driving a PC tower, the monitor and peripherals to the party. Dual video cards and hard disk drives in raid for maximum performance are a common sight amongst gaming laptops as is a $3000 price tag.

Buying a used laptop is a way of getting a laptop for less than it costs new. I would like to warn everybody thinking about getting one, that it is crucially important to examine it before purchase. Scrutinize every little detail you can possibly think of including screen, hard disk, keyboard. Even try the hinges if they hold the monitor in position properly. Buying a used laptop is like buying a second hand car. It's a personal item and without due care it suffers damage during its lifetime. You don't want to buy a broken laptop, do you.

Refurbished laptops are like used laptops with a bit of twist. Manufacturers often take broken devices back, fix them and sell them again for a lower price. There are also refurb laptops that the owner didn't care for and gave it back after a few days or weeks. Nonprofit Laptops: A Dream Not Yet Over

LONDON — If you’d been told three years ago that someone was developing an educational laptop for the world’s poorest countries to buy for less than $200 each and that, by now, some one million children in 31 countries would be using them, what would you have thought?

Wow — that’s what I’d have thought. Wow again when I was told that up to one million more of those laptops were on order. The problem for One Laptop Per Child, the American nonprofit organization that has achieved all of the above, is that when its founder, the technologist Nicholas Negroponte, spelled out its objectives at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos in 2006, he promised to sell the laptop for $100 and to ship seven million of them.

Does he regret having promised so much? “When I started, I had to be knowingly hyperbolic, otherwise we could not have changed corporate strategy or swung governments into action,” said Mr. Negroponte. “It attracted the kind of attention that made this happen. Had I just said that I would make two million laptops by 2010 for children, OLPC would have been just another start-up.”

Perhaps, but by inflating expectations he has (unwittingly) helped his critics to attack one of the most ambitious design projects of our time. The sad, silly truth is that most designers still devote most of their efforts to the wealthiest 10 percent of the global population, rather than the “other 90 percent” who lack basic products and services. Designing a cheap, efficient educational laptop as part of a flexible learning system for kids in poor countries is a bold attempt to address that. It is also very risky and (thanks to Mr. Negroponte’s flair for spin) so visible that, if OLPC fails, it will be even harder to mount similarly ambitious projects in future. “I’m personally in two minds about its success,” said Cameron Sinclair, a co-founder of the Architecture for Humanity volunteer network, which uses OLPC laptops in a Kenyan school, adding that “it has certainly inspired designers to think bigger and on a grander scale.”

Yet lots of people seem to want OLPC to flop. The development lobby has dismissed it both for being a vanity project (no prizes for guessing whose) and for trying to apply first world solutions to third world problems. Teachers have criticized its educational methodology. Environmentalists have warned of toxic dumps of unwanted laptops. Techies have said it wouldn’t work and raged when OLPC replaced its bespoke operating system with one of Microsoft’s. And the tech industry has moaned about losing potential sales in new markets.

OLPC has undoubtedly suffered from straddling such ferociously political sectors as tech, development and education — and from launching at a time when high profile projects suddenly came under scrutiny from blogging and tweeting. Only two months ago, a Web site run by the United Nations (one of OLPC’s earliest champions) posted a blog entitled “One Laptop Per Child — The Dream is Over.” The one thing that OLPC’s critics — and supporters — agree on is that the XO1 laptop’s small, light tablet format, designed by fuseproject in San Francisco, has inspired other companies to launch similar models and created a fast-growing new product category. If Apple launches its long-rumored tablet computer, that category could become much, much bigger. Impressive, but not one of OLPC’s lofty objectives.

Despite everything, Mr. Negroponte claims that the tide is turning. Late last month the Uruguayan government completed the process of distributing an XO1 to each of its 415,000 elementary school children as the first phase of the Plan Ceibal initiative to provide a laptop for every student and teacher in the country.

Until now, OLPC has only had the evidence of small, isolated projects to rebuff its critics. What happens in Uruguay should demonstrate — one way or another — whether it can achieve its objective of improving educational standards on a sustainable basis. We all know that people learn in different ways. Some people learn better by watching others, some learn better by reading, and some learn by doing. No matter what way you learn you can use an interactive notebook.

Interactive notebooks are created by each person individually. They can be created in a number of different ways using a number of different techniques. You should create them based on your needs.

You can make an interactive notebook for information regarding maps, ads, history, timelines, and politics. When you create notebooks for these types of suggestions, you will learn so much. You design them in a way that will help you learn.

These pieces are perfect for projects, study guides, and reports. They can be created by children and adults. You are not limited to the subject matter or content either.

All you need to get started with your own interactive notebook is colored pencils, crayons, highlighters, pen or pencil, binder or notebook, paper, glue, scissors, and information on your subject.

If the information you gather is something you can cut apart, you will want to cut out the information that is important to what you are studying. If you can't cut them out, you will want to make copies of the information. Once you have these pieces cut out, you will need to glue them to the right side of your notebook or paper. On the left side you will take notes and add information that is important to what you read in the pieces you glued.

You will want to write these in your own words and use pictures and other information that will help you remember what you read. Use charts, diagrams, graphics, and drawings that will remind you of what you read as well.

If you are creating your interactive notebook for a report or project, you may want to do your writing on notebook paper first so you can write it the way you want and make any necessary changes. Once you have it worded the way you want, you are ready to put it to print in your notebook.

These notebooks are also great for classroom projects. You can create them and share with the class or you can use them as a report based on the information provided by the teacher. These are also a great guide to use as study material for semester finals or tests.

If you use these in a classroom setting you will want to use information provided by the teacher on the right and then the students can add their own information on the left. The teacher can provide handouts, notes, and pictures. Students can take their own notes based on the information discussed in class. The students can research even further to come up with more information that can be included in the notebook.

How do you make the best choice with your hard earned money when you need to buy a computer?

Low cost netbooks are the smallest, very light weight, easy to stow away and carry, has WIFI, networked, but is very limited and slows down when it comes to running most common large applications. Netbooks are great if all you need is a basic online connection for email and taking notes.

Some notebooks and mini-laptops are priced just above the netbook cost and a performance notebook may go 2 to 4x of a netbook cost and have larger displays, more computing power, memory, disk space, is larger to carry in a backpack, takes more power and battery life is typically a few hours. Notebooks are typically designed with a price point, to match performance with a range of moderate to good capability and may perform very well for most of today's user application needs. A good notebook can easily do most any computing that is needed with reasonably good performance and has the advantage of complete under-the-arm computer portability and fits on top of your lap or any flat surface top.

Desktop computers range from very small to large boxes that are designed to run off AC wall power and left in a fixed location at a personal workspace-desk or area in a cabinet as an application server. Desktop costs range as low as a netbook and typically are at a lower cost than a notebook with similar capability. For the best value, one can usually find a much higher performance computer, more CPU, RAM, disk space, powerful graphics, have fast responding applications, for games, video image processing, and video phones. Overall, the desktop computer is the best choice if portability is not required.

Thus, I bought myself a 286 machine. Shared the cost with another student friend. Yes, we both didn't have to stay cooped up in the college computer room to complete our computer assignments. We did it all at home. Many of the other computer students also bought their own computers to enable them to complete their assignments at home. Basically, back then, students rely on computers at home. Notebooks? Yeah, it's the paper kind which we write on with pens and pencils.

Fast forward to the present day. The year 2008 saw the emergence of a new breed of notebook computers. ASUS was the first to bring about the Eee PC. A notebook which is small in many ways - price, size, weight, and features. It was the first sub USD$500 notebook.

The other hardware vendors stayed away from the market. However, they kept a close look at it and paid attention to the market growth. Before you know it, many more hardware players joined in the bandwagon as the market for the sub USD$500 machines boomed tremendously. Today, we see the big players like HP and Lenovo making their presence felt in this fast growing market segment better know now netbook. Low cost netbooks have made its way into the main stream and making headlines.

Thanks to these cheap netbooks, more students can now own a computer. If only they can somehow bring it even lower. How about below MYR1000? That would mean, a sub USD$200. I do think it's possible. Maybe in a couple of years or so.

2. Light Weight

I am very familiar to the burden of having to carry a notebook around day in and day out. Yes, I am a notebook backpacker, and proud of it too. Every once in a while, I would have to like do some spring cleaning of my notebook backpack. Yes, after a few weeks, it'd be filled with papers and notes which I don't really refer to nor do I actually have a need for them. They are just there in the backpack, piling up after so many days at work.

The backpack alone, with the required paddings and what nots weighs handsomely. Add a notebook (3kg), a group of CDs and DVDs (0.5kg), and the above mentioned load of paperwork, I'd say I'm carrying around a good 5kg to 6kg of weight on my shoulder every single day.

At first, you don't really notice the heaviness of that 5kg. After a while, your shoulders and your back starts to ache and you begin to wonder why. Only then do you realize that it's probably caused by the sheer weight of that extra 5kg which you have to carry around daily.

The netbooks of today weighs in at about 1.5kg. Some would probably weigh more depending on the battery it's installed with. Not a lot more, however. A netbook with a 6 cell battery weighs in at about slightly less than 2kg. Still way better than a standard notebook.

College students, especially the ladies, would certainly benefit from the netbooks being light weight. Being as light as they are currently, college students can surely carry them around as they commute around the college campus from one class to another. No worries of a shoulder or back pain as the netbooks are very light indeed.

3. Small Footprint

When sitting in a lecture hall, there really is not much space for a college student to use. The seats are normally equipped with a small flexible table. Setting up a standard 14inch or 15inch notebook on these small table tops would be a hassle. There will not be any room left for anything other than the notebook.

Here lies the beauty of a netbook. Netbooks are size at a mere 10inch, some even smaller. They just fit in nicely for a lecture hall environment. Set one up on that small flexible table, and you probably would have a tiny bit of space left to put anything small. A small Post It Notes perhaps? An MP3 recorder perhaps?

The sheer small size also means that the netbook need not be carried in a notebook backpack. Ladies can probably just dump the tiny unit into their handbags. Of course, it's not going to fit if they use those tiny little handbags that really can't fit anything but their facial makeover items.

A standard (is there such a thing) coach handbag will certainly fit a 10inch netbook nicely. No one would even suspect that there is computer in the handbag.

4. Communication Features

Almost all netbooks currently are configured with a handsome lot of communication features. It's got speakers, cameras, wifi, and bluetooth for a start. These components are already good enough to allow users to communicate with ease over the internet.

Social networking? Chatting space? Skype? Yahoo Messenger? Google Chat? FaceBook? MySpace? Video conferencing? Just name it. Even the most basic low cost netbook is more than capable of allowing its' users to utilize all the above mentioned communication channel. That is why a netbook, even the most basic ones are already more than capable to allow college students to communicate with their peers from wherever they are.

5. Style

Have you seen these low cost netbooks? Don't they look awesome? One thing is for sure, the manufacturers are really putting in their effort to make these tiny units look exceptionally good. The finishing they've put on these netbooks are simply pleasing to the eyes. A true eye candy, I might say so myself. They come in multiple choice of colors. You name it, they come in orange, blue, red, yellow, gray, black, green, and many more.

Now wouldn't you agree that the low cost netbook makes for the best lap tops notebook computer for college students? I certainly think so. Why not? Well, of course, its not going to be suitable for all college assignments. As long as the student understands the limitation of the Atom CPU, it would be just dandy. Surely they can't expect the small netbook to be capable of rendering 3D motion graphics for them. It would also not be suitable to compile really complex engineering calculations and large programming compilation jobs.

I'd say that netbooks will be the must have gadget for college students pretty soon, if not already. You wouldn't be cool without one.

Every writer should invest in a notebook. The notebook is an idea catcher, a problem solver, a rant holder, a place to strategize, to develop, to record observations. It's a storage space, a bank and a vault. Think about where you store your ideas, where you solve writing problems, where you create. Is it in one focused place? Are your ideas organized or scattered? Do you have shoeboxes filled with napkins and envelopes?

If you're a beginning writer, looking for your first big idea, or trying to take your work in a new direction, the writer's notebook is a worthwhile endeavour.

While it is beneficial to write in your notebook everyday, it's important to make a distinction: the writer's notebook is not the same as a personal diary. Make a clear separation between professional writing and personal writing.

So if it's not a diary, and you're supposed to write every day, what do you write?

Everything in the writer's notebook should be work related. Even the rants! Keep your notebook as organized as possible with a section for ideas, a section for observations, a section for project specific questions, a section for writing exercises, a section for rants, and so on. Every day, write in each section. It doesn't have to be long or cover multiple pages, nor does it have to be your best writing. Expecting brilliance every time you create is the quickest path to writer's block. Simply work on a routine of regular writing in a consistent manner in a focused location.

It's important to keep in mind that this notebook does not have to keep to a traditional form. It can - it can be a small moleskine that you carry around to be whipped out at a moments notice when creativity strikes. But there are many writers who don't create with pen and paper. Don't reject this concept because it's outside your current creation method. It's easy to be flexible with the form of the notebook. It can be a file folder with pictures for inspiration. A blackberry where you store idea files. An envelope of newspaper clippings. An artist's pad. The form doesn't matter so long as it allows you to write in a consistent and regular manner.

Every writer needs a place to store the thoughts, the ideas, the observations, that occur daily. Every writer should have a single point of access, a well to draw from when something special is needed to move a project forward. Use the writer's notebook to inspire creativity, to prevent writer's block, to consistently improve your skills as a professional writer.

Connectivity in Netbooks is paramount and hence it generally comes with a whole array of USB connectors, an Ethernet connection and the latest available wireless technology. Under the hood, the processor for Netbooks needs to be a frugal drinker of electricity. As of today, three different platforms are available. The reliable but ageing VIA C7D (HP 2133 miniNote), the popular Intel Atom processor, and the mixed-bag options offered by AMD (Sempron 2100+, Turion64 or the puny Geode LX800). Memory typically comes in the 512MB-2GB range. Storage may be in the form of a SSD (solid state drive) or a simple hard drive. While SSD's are faster, compact and consume less power, they also add a lot to the price tag of Netbooks. As a compromise, some vendors ship their units with a limited capacity (2-4 GB) flash memory which usually contains the operating system, and a standard hard drive for storage.

In terms of software, you can go for Windows XP or Linux. Linux distributions like Ubuntu 8.10 are an excellent choice as they work very well out of the box. Windows Vista performance is generally poor as they require more power.

A checklist while getting Netbooks can be as follows:-

• Power efficiency- The Atom offers the best bet, but the 945 chipset it ships with is old. The newer US15 chipset is expected to be out soon. Keep a lookout

• Memory- 512MB maybe adequate but you are better off with 1GB+

• Video - Look out for the upcoming Ion(Atom+ GeForce 9400) platform for NVidia with HD Playback capabilities

• Hard Drive -SSD's offer performance and efficiency at higher prices

• Price- can be bought within $500 in general

Most major brands like Dell, HP, Compaq and Acer have Netbooks in their lineup. The ASUS Eee Pc, the first one launched, is also a decent choice. What you have to decide is whether you actually need a Netbook. While it offers portability, a rich web experience and lightweight computing capabilities, it is not really a replacement for a laptop or a phone and in general have failed to find a market niche till date.

Apple leaks 17-inch iMac for $899

It's kind of funny when an Italian-language site breaks a wee bit of English-language-based Apple news, but that's what happened when SetteB.IT spotted a small mention of an $899 17-inch iMac for the education market on Apple's own Web site.

Currently, Apple is offering iMacs only in 20- and 24-inch screen sizes. The 20-inch model starts at $1,199, and the 24-incher starts at $1,499.

No word on when the "new" 17-incher will arrive (or if it's really new), but we'll await official confirmation from Apple.

Anybody interested? In this economy, I think the sub-$1,000 market is a good spot for Apple to play in--especially when it comes to cash-strapped parents of students.
